Microneedling Aftercare: What to Do in the First Week
By Hollywood Skin Atlanta | September 30, 2026
Downtown Lawrenceville, near Courthouse Square
The number one rule after microneedling is simple: treat your skin like it’s open and reactive for the first 48 to 72 hours. Keep it clean, keep it hydrated, and keep it out of Georgia heat and sun. At my Lawrenceville studio, I numb you for comfort during your $230 microneedling session and I always recommend indoor recovery afterward because sweat, makeup, and active ingredients can undo a lot of good work fast.
And yes, I get it. You’ve got work, kids, and plans. A predictable first week is the goal, so you’re not guessing every time you look in the mirror.
Microneedling Aftercare: Your 0 to 48 Hour Rules (this is the make-or-break window)
Right after microneedling, redness and a warm, tight feeling are common. Some people get mild swelling too, especially around the cheeks and under-eyes. I generally recommend you plan on a low-key day and keep your hands off your face. No picking, no rubbing, no “let me just exfoliate that little patch.”
Quick do’s (first 48 hours): cleanse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry with a clean towel, and focus on simple hydration. If I sent you home with a specific topical, stick to that plan.
What to avoid right away
- Sun and UV exposure. In our humid subtropical Georgia climate, heat plus sun tends to bring more redness and more swelling.
- Heavy exercise and sweating for at least 48 to 72 hours. Sweat can sting and it’s not your friend while your skin is calming down.
- Makeup for at least 48 to 72 hours. Your skin needs a clean surface while those micro-channels close.
- Pools, hot tubs, and saunas for at least 48 to 72 hours. Chlorine and heat can irritate quickly.
If you’re planning to be out at Aurora Theatre or around the Courthouse Square weekend after your appointment, I usually suggest scheduling earlier in the week. That timing gives your skin a calmer look by Saturday.
Days 3 to 7: How to keep the glow without triggering irritation
By around 72 hours, most people look less red and feel less tight. This is the phase where you can get a little dry or “sandpapery” as the skin turns over. That’s normal. The mistake I see is trying to speed it up with acids or a scrub.
Keep your routine boring. Gentle cleanse, hydrate, moisturize. If you’re prone to hyperpigmentation, this week is when you protect your investment with strict sun avoidance and smart SPF use once the skin is no longer open and sensitive.
Don’t pick or peel. Let dryness shed on its own. Picking is one of the fastest ways to invite irritation or lingering dark marks.
Keep workouts controlled. If you return to exercise after 72 hours, start light. If your face turns bright red and hot, back off and give it another day.
The product “yes list” after microneedling (and the ingredient pause list)
If you’re asking “what should I put on my face after microneedling, ” think clean and calming. I’m an esthetician, and my goal in this week is to protect your barrier so the work we did has a chance to show up as smoother texture and a brighter look.
Stick with these basics
- A gentle cleanser (no fragrance, no exfoliating beads, no acids)
- Sterile hyaluronic serum for hydration
- A non-comedogenic moisturizer
- Mineral SPF once your skin feels calm and no longer “open” (usually after the initial recovery window)
Pause these for 1 to 2 weeks: retinoids, AHAs and BHAs, and strong vitamin C. If you’re not sure what counts, send me a photo of the front and back of the product and I’ll tell you yes or no.
If you found me while searching microneedling near me, facials near me, or even chemical peel near me, this is the part that surprises people. Great results often come down to what you don’t do for a few days.
Sleep, cooling, and “I have plans” tips for Downtown Lawrenceville schedules
Here are the practical things that make the first week easier, especially if you’re bouncing between work, school drop-offs, and life.
How to sleep the first 2 nights
Sleep on a clean pillowcase and try to stay on your back if you can. Slightly elevating your head often helps if you’re puffy in the morning.
Cooling compress, the right way
If you feel hot or swollen, a cool compress can help. Keep it clean, keep it gentle, and don’t press hard or drag across the skin.
Makeup timing
Give it at least 48 to 72 hours. If your skin still feels tender or looks very pink, wait another day. That extra patience usually pays off.
I serve Lawrenceville and nearby towns, including Norcross, Lilburn, Dacula, Buford, and Suwanee, so if something feels off you’re not on your own. A quick check-in can save you a lot of stress.
What’s normal, what’s not, and when I want you to reach out
Normal early healing usually looks like redness, mild swelling, tightness, and dryness. Tiny pinpoint bleeding can happen during treatment, but it shouldn’t turn into ongoing bleeding at home. If you’re ever unsure, I’d rather you ask than stress in silence.
Red flags I don’t want you to ignore
- Increasing pain instead of gradual improvement
- Spreading redness that keeps expanding
- Fever, pus, or unusual swelling
- A sudden reaction after using a new product
“Listen, Jessica at Hollywood Skin Atlanta is that girl! My skin has done a complete 180 since I started seeing her consistently, the glow is real!”
